War for the Planet of the Apes: A Disappointing End to the Trilogy

Despite arriving in cinemas as one of the most hyped blockbusters of the summer, War for the Planet of the Apes fails to live up to expectations, feeling like a more compromised film than its brilliant predecessor. The narrative is darker, yet this is a much tonally lighter film, with brand new irritating comedy sidekicks and empathetic human characters, who add nothing to the central storyline and feel more like inventions by the studio (terrified of releasing a film more relentlessly depressing than 2014’s Dawn of the Planet of the Apes), than a figment of writer/director Matt Reeves’ original vision.
